INTRODUCTION
The computer lab has 6 classes in progress at the time. There are three classes for French, three classes for Swahili and one class for English with the majority of the students from the host community.
Swahili class 1 graduate during the second week of February, French class 1 and the Zambian class will graduate in March, while the rest of the classes will graduate in May.
STATISTICS / INDICATORS
Student’s attendance was regular for the month of January except for the week of 26-29th of January when the camp had population census as all members of the camp spent many hours of the day getting registered though this census happened zone to zone. People / students were to be there to register themselves considering that there are many people in zones and this process got longer sometimes as certain families had babies who did not exist in the data base.
Though the Zambian class is regular for lessons, the teachers feel that it should be the last class to be enrolled as these teachers are in a repatriation mood. Teachers feel that long classes should end so that they don’t get abandoned during repatriation.
REQUESTS / WISHES
There is need for adequate ink in the computer lab as short and intense classes call for many prints of certificates especially with the introduction of short and intense classes.
SUBSTANTIAL PROBLEMS / ISSUES
Due to the heavy rains that were constant during the month, the computer lab did away with practice hours in order to give the solar panels enough time for recharging so that there was enough power for actual classes. Students were so eager to donate money for fuel on their own will for the start so that they learn regularly but this new idea of students contributing a small amount of money has not been easy as many of these students live on less than a dollar per week. Hope the power situation normalizes as we approach March where the rain season gets to be Skippy.
The generator has a fault, hope that the new budget will cutter for repairs of all equipment or the new COC, Nick could possibly find solutions to the repair of the generator. The end and beginning of the year had no breakdowns of equipment. This made work become smooth as there were no major repairs to be done.
UPCOMING ACTIVITIES
The computer lab will continue with short and intense classes to prepare returnees with basics of computer though these classes face a lot of resistance as people feel that they won’t gain much in few days since computer education is complex.
