Kala Health Services - September 2008

posted 01/06/09 16:46:11 by

1. Introduction:

Health project is forging ahead successfully. All activities under health went well in September except for the traveling workshops which we still have some difficulties here and there as the number of teachers was reduced. The work at the departure center is going on amazingly well whenever there is a convoy. Video shows on HIV/AIDS, STI’s have continued during evenings, and there is so far always a good audience of returnees during this period. The attendance is over a hundred each time., There is clarification of peoples questions and general education after each video show. Children are not left out, Children are also taught on transmission of HIV and AIDS combined with playing games with these children. There were about 200 children who participated in the last convoy’s activities on HIV and AIDS.

HEALTH AND BODY

i. Introduction:

For the month of September, Health and body did well. Classes had been going on well, many people were granted with certificates. People in the camp have expressed great desire to attend health classes before they repatriate so as to have knowledge on how one can keep themselves safe in Congo in case some people repatriate to places where there are no hospitals. This could be in terms of First Aids, Personal Hygiene and so on. As the Zambian class graduated so we have started recruiting new students but we haven’t started the lessons.

ii. Indicators and Statistics:

  • Level 1 - 330 Participants
  • Level 2 - 522 Participants
  • Level 3 - 353 Participants

iii. Substantial problem/issues:

As the printer which was in the computer lab was not working, it was time consuming on the other hand for staff to travel to Kawambwa in order to print or photocopy certificates as there are very few places with proper photocopiers in Kawambwa. This caused a delay in the distribution of certificates. This problem has hopefully been solved that Alyssa has brought a new printer to kala.

iv. Wishes/Request:

Video Deck for repatriation activities at the departure centre.

TRAVELING WORKSHOPS

a. Introduction:

Traveling workshops improved a little bit for the month of September. Workshops took place although participants were complaining about the changes of not having many teachers which meant that these people had to go to other friendly corners which were probably a little bit away from their sections .

b. Indicators and Statistics:

  • Female Participants - 32
  • Male Participants - 17
  • Total Participants - 49

c. Substantial problem/issues:

Traveling workshops had four friendly corners where workshops took place and people were used to attend these classes from friendly corners besides their homes. But for now since workshops are taking place at one friendly corner many people are failing to attend because of the distance. People are complaining about this distance issue hope they stop complaining one day because there is no easy option to this problem as many teachers lost their jobs due to budget cutting by management.

d. Wishes/Request:

Nothing big to point out

YOUTH GROUP

1) Introduction:

Youth group did well for the month of September .Classes and games took place accordingly although schools re-opened as good number of children attended classes.

2) Indicators and statistics:

  • Female Participants - 308
  • Male Participants - 288
  • Total Participants - 596

3) Substantial problems/issues:

Youths statistics was abit difficult to follow up as the learning time became too long (six Months). There is now need to revise the syllabus so that these youths can only learn to a good timely time of one month so that youths dont abandon classes. This will also give room for a good follow up one which youths attend the classes consistently to avoid duplication of figures.

4) Wishes/request:

-Health Reading books (French and Swahili) -VCD’s, DVD’s Health related.

Upcoming project activities and event
