Mwange Computer Training Center Project Coordinator Blog - June/July 2009

This June marked both the end of FORGE year 2008 and the end of the short class program. This 5-day short class was intended for repatriating people and had a total number of 23 intakes at an average of nine students per intake. The 10th intake for long classes is ending on 3 July, which will also be the day when we will post a list for the 11th intake.

Starting July, we have decided to reduce the intake period to four weeks instead of six. This is in order to have five intakes, and hence more people benefiting. This period is the FORGE phase-out stage as they are planning to move to Congo too. All activities are planned to ensure a smooth transition.

This period of the year is a little better than the previous as we are in the dry season. Power is a little bit stable although one solar panel has been relocated to Maheba Camp. With our recently planned schedule, practice hours will go from Monday to Friday by 15h30 up to 18h00. On Sunday, practice is scheduled in the morning 9h00 to 11h30 as there will be no class the whole day.

Everything in the lab is still in good condition apart from some mice that are down and we have noticed the sign of some computer batteries to becoming less effective. These computers are always subject to virus attacks and currently we still have one virus, which contains a pattern of the W32/Sohanad.R Windows virus, which we cannot get rid of.

To make sure that resources are available and are well calculated, we have come up with the schedule for the entire 5-month period that will end on November 20. The computer lab is still catching the interest of the community and a great number of people are applying for courses.
