Mwangaza Project Coordinator Blog March 2009

"(Note - This blog was written by the refugee Project Coordinator for this project. As English is not his first language, there may be some minor grammatical errors in his writing. Care was taken to clarify any passages that were confusing, while leaving most of the blog untouched in order to preserve his original tone.)"

The third month of the first term brought with it a very strong conviction to all Mwangaza staffs and parents that we were really moving in the right direction toward our objectives. Operating for the first time in an area where early childhood education is considered lunacy takes passion and patience so as to make people ardent or to create the notion of the importance of early childhood education and adult literacy education.

So far, a great deal of success has been recorded. Basically what we teach at the centres is English, arithmetic, science, social studies, creative art, and physical education. When all these kids reported at the centres for the first time, they completely knew nothing and their overall development was greatly entangled. We endured triumphantly, so far a chain of success has started to emerge. We have been able to lure the attention of the parents who were shocked to hear the Mwangaza kids teaching English to first through fifth graders from the basic school. This has made the centres and their staffs more eminent in the community. Kids are now able to solve math problems, have become aware of the environment, and are also acquiring some creative art skills essential to their general development.

All the people in the Block F community have now been able to accept and embrace our ideas. This can be seen in the way the PTA has been operating in the just ended term, it also looks to be more promising because the PTA vowed to work hand in hand with the staffs to ensure that there is effective delivery in terms of services. So far the centres are able to render services to a maximum of 110 children and 75 adults. We are hoping to see more success and achievements by the end of next term.
