RHS Project Coordinator Blog June 2009 (Note - This blog was written by the refugee Project Coordinator for this project. As English is not his/her first language, there may be some minor grammatical errors in his/her writing. Care was taken to clarify any passages that were confusing, while leaving most of the blog untouched in order to preserve his/her original tone.)

Block G Clinic aims to teach people about different diseases, and to provide basic consultations and referrals to other clinics as needed. This past month we offered consultations to 67 patients, the majority of whom presented with malaria and were referred to a Ministry of Health clinic for treatment. We also provided over 200 condoms to residents of Block G.

In June, we started a new HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in the community. In conjunction with another NGO, Grassroots Soccer, we used sports as a medium to foster community spirit and self-respect, providing youth with necessary knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention; and how to lead healthier, responsible lives. This program reached 27 children ranging in age from 9 to 17. Prior to the start of the program we conducted interviews to assess general knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission and treatment, and hope to improve the number of participants with practical knowledge by at least 90% upon completion.
