Community-Driven Repatriation Center - April 2009

posted 03/22/10 18:00:11 by

Summary of project status and achievements:

Reintegration Skills teacher Mangungu took over the SFCG program after the resignation of Kitoko . He is now working fifteen hours- ten for reintegration, five for SFCG- and is doing very well in his new role. Recruitment and participation in the program has already improved significantly, as it was discovered that the former SFCG teacher was only recruiting in French, not Kiswahili, thereby excluding the vast majority of the Kala population. The former teacher also made clear his preference for educated participants, and was actively recruiting as such by only recruiting in schools. Recruitment is now being done in all sectors of the community and an active effort is being made to involve a diverse population in SFCG programming.

Coordinator Andrew has facilitated Go and See Visit film screenings in collaboration with UNHCR. This film visits happily repatriated refugees in DRC and provides information about the repatriation process. Andrew recruited participants from each of Kala’s four zones by working with section leaders, and each zone had an individual screening in the library. When marketpeople complained they were unable to see the film because they were working, Andrew coordinated a special evening session for all market vendors. Other viewing sessions took place in Kala video halls and at private homes, which opened their doors to the community. Twelve more sessions are planned in various locations, and UNHCR has generously provided all supplies. All questions on the film are being relayed to UNHCR for response. Most questions pertain to receiving iron sheets and bicycles upon repatriation. More than two thousand Kala residents viewed the film this month.

All CDRC classes continued without any problems. An intake of Community Development, Business Affairs, Non-Violent Communication, and Reintegration Workshops each completed this month.

Indicators and Statistics:

See March spreadsheet.

Future goals:

To collaborate with section leaders to continue showing the Go and See Visit film throughout the community.

Substantial problems or issues:

The radio being used by CDRC only plays tapes, but much of the SFCG material is recorded on CDs. As such, most of the SFCG material is unable to reach the community.

Wishes or requests:

A CD player for SFCG activities (see above section) and Energizer Batteries from Lusaka.
